In the mid 17th century, the Saito family moved from Osaka to Fushimi and opened a business selling kimonos to travelers under the name of "Izutsuya Ihei",but when railway service began in the late 1800s and eventually replaced ships as the primary mode of transportation, it spurred the 9th generation Sotaro Saito to go into the sake brewing business in 1895. In the early years, they sold products under the "Yanagimasamune" and "Otaka" labels, but, in 1915, the 10th generation Teiichiro Saito changed the company trademark to the current "Eikun". In 1974,the 11th generation Atsushi Saito built the office and brewery on this site. After the 12th generation Toru Saito became president in 1990, the company began brewing sake from "Iwai" rice grown in Kyoto Prefecture and sold only to breweries in Kyoto. Every since,it and other rice breands produced in Kyoto Prefecture have been the focus of product development and won numerous awards in recent years from the National Research Institute of Brewing and elseahere.
